Scorpius X-5 (Sco X-5) is the designation for a fifth astronomical X-ray source, found perhaps while searching for Scorpius XR-5, confirmed by the X-ray observatory satellite Uhuru. Scorpius is one of the 88 modern constellations that the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has used to divide the celestial sphere into irregularly shaped boxes. It may have been in one of the earlier catalogs 1ASE or 2ASE,[1] where the designation Sco X-5 did not carry over into subsequent catalogs. A series of astronomical X-ray sources have been detected within Scorpius: Uhuru X-ray sources that may be Scorpius X-5. J2000 location is RA 16h 45m 47.7s Dec -45° 36′ 40″. It has also been designated Lockheed three (L3) and GX 340-2.[1] Astronomical X-ray source Main article: Astronomical X-ray source 2U 1718-39[1] (3U 1714-39,[2] Sco XR-5?, 4U 1715-39, Scorpius 5?[3]) was detected and described, but not initially by Uhuru.[4] This source is ~6.5° from Sco XR-5. Scorpius X-5 has also been detected by HEAO 1 A-1 experiment at 1H 1710-387 and OSO 7 at 1M 1714-393. Its position in equatorial coordinates for the year 2000 (J2000) is right ascension (RA) 17h 18m 23s declination (Dec) -39° 21.1′. Visibly dark X-ray source Main article: Visibly dark X-ray source Of the first X-ray sources discovered in each constellation (126 for 89 areas), some 63% are visibly dark. These visually dark X-ray sources can be radiative cosmic dust, hydrogen gas such as an H II region (e.g. the Orion Nebula), an H I region of hydrogen, a molecular cloud, or a coronal-type gas cloud.
