Inis Cathaig is a titular see of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland. History Inis Cathaig has its basis in the Scattery Island Cathedral and monastery, an early Christian place of pilgrimage, where St Senan, Bishop and confessor, founded a monastery, in the Shannon estuary, 5 km southwest of Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland. The see was canonically established as the Inis Cathaig diocese after the Synod of Rathbreasail in 1111. It became extinct sometime after that, and continues today only as a titular see. Bishops Titular bishops of Inis Cathaig have included: Thomas Jerome Welsh (1970-1974) William Anthony Hughes (1974-1979) John Edward Heaps (1981-2004) Frank Joseph Caggiano (2006-) References Catholic Hierarchy page This Ireland-related article is a stub.
